IV. Projects Involved

Unit-NET logo  UnIT-NET: IT in University Management Network. Project No: MP-JEP-2010-2003. Funded by TEMPUS, 2003-2005

UnIT-NET Infrastructure for Electronic Data Interchange (IEDI) is the multi-layered distributed software system for providing intelligent ontology-driven information retrieval from distributed, heterogeneous, autonomous information resources. IEDI is constructed according to the ideology of mediator-wrapper architecture with single centralized mediator. Web services technology has allowed to deal with distributedness of the participants - users, wrappers, mediator, and information resources.

Domain ontologies (coded in OWL DL) are created semi-automatically from information resources schemas (currently RDBMS) and are the source of domain knowledge captured in each resource. Domain mediator ontology (also in OWL DL) is constructed/updated incrementally and semi-automatically when new information resource is registered to the mediator or changes. Supplementary mapping ontologies store mappings between domain ontologies and domain mediator ontology.

User may pose queries related to the knowledge spreaded over the information resources with help of the mediator domain ontology in a visual query formulation tool (called QFI), accessible through the Web. The initial "visual" query is then transformed into the internal query language (RDQL), and after that it is subjected to decomposition into the subqueries, each of which is correspondent to relevant resource. IR wrappers return the result to the mediator side and the consolidated result is returned to the user.

MullPar logo  MullPar: information system for storage, gathering and retrieval of data on parasites of mullets in the World Ocean. Project No: 03-51-5998. Funded by INTAS, 2004-2005.

RACING logo  RACING: Rational Agent Coalitions for INtelliGent Mediation of Information Retrieval on the Net Project was funded by National Ministry of Science and Education, 2001-2003, under the grant No. 0102Y005339.

The aim of RACING project is to allow personalized search within distributed information resources (IRs) with help of user profiles. RACING is the Multi-Agent System, consisting of User Agents (enabling personalized search query construction and user profile undates), Mediator Agent (responsible for answering queries on mediator ontology), Query Transformation Agents (transforming initial user queries into correspondent internal queries to the mediator) and Resource Wrapper Agents responsible for answering relevant subqueries in underlying information resources.

In frame of RACING user profile is the reference ontology which allows collecting and keeping the knowledge on what a key word or a key phrase means for the particular user. This personal knowledge is presented as a semantic relationship ("is-a", "part-of", "instance-of" etc) between the given key word/phrase and the concept of the mediator ontology, weighted with a similarity accuracy rating.

Methods for Process Modelling and Management in Complex Distributed Systems with Autonomous Active Components. Funded by National Ministry of Science and Education, 2001-2003.
